'Schist is one of the most challenging soils for grape vines, limiting the yields on these 40-year olds so severely that the Steingarten vineyard accounts only for a small percentage of this wine. But the mineral savor those vines give to their fruit dominates the blend, and it's nothing less than glorious. Dense and pure in the mouth, the flavors are ceaseless in the end, a full second half of the flavor beginning after you swallow the first. The details keep shifting, as if kayaking down-stream from one rock-strewn rapid to the next. This is a great vintage of Steingarten - a classic, magical riesling.'--Wine & Spirits
